As part of Ella’s Peas  – our new heritage project celebrating the life and achievements of pioneering businesswoman Ella Hudson-Gasking – we have two exciting new paid opportunities. We are looking for a Digital Archivist to document and curate project materials and a Film Archivist to capture our final exhibition as a 360° video. These roles will help preserve and share the stories of the women who worked at Batchelors’ pea-canning factory, ensuring their experiences are remembered for generations to come. If you are passionate about heritage, storytelling, and digital documentation, we’d love to hear from you!

We welcome applications from women and those who identify as women, as they are currently underrepresented in the fields of archiving and filmmaking. As part of our commitment to equity and inclusion, we actively encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply, ensuring that heritage and storytelling reflect a broad range of voices and experiences.

Digital Archivist

Chol Theatre are celebrating the life and achievements of Ella Hudson-Gasking and are looking for an experienced digital archivist to document the project.

From 1913, Ella was director of food-giant Batchelors’, building the world’s largest pea-canning factory in Wadsley Bridge and blazing the way for female entrepreneurs.

We have identified a group of women with connections to Batchelors who, with expert guidance, Ella’s Archive Group will lead research into the female workforce. We want to capture recollections of conditions, camaraderie, and practices at the factory, encouraging a sense of pride, belonging and wellbeing.

This content – a combination of oral histories and archival research, will form a multidisciplinary exhibition, which will take place in Summer 2025 at Sheffield Pollen Market. It will also be pivotal to a digital  ‘Imaginary Museum Playbox’ – an engaging and inspiring digital educational resource that will go into 25 schools in the local area.

Working alongside Chol Team, associate artists, archives, and Ella’s Archive Group we are looking for a digital archivist to:

  •  Collate all materials from the project, including meeting minutes, notebooks to be shared as a digital archive.
  • Create digital copies of Batchelors’ archive materials and exhibit/present images documenting the process of the project.
  • Contribute to project planning and evaluation meetings, as required.

Fee: £1,000

Timeline: January – June 2025

Film Archivists

Chol Theatre are celebrating the life and achievements of Ella Hudson-Gasking.

From 1913, Ella was director of food-giant Batchelors’, building the world’s largest pea-canning factory in Wadsley Bridge and blazing the way for female entrepreneurs.

We are looking for an experienced film archivist to document our final exhibition as a ‘360’ video clip.

The exhibition will comprise research and oral histories gathered by a group of women with local connections to the Batchelor’s factory site. Over a period of months, this group will have uncovered inspirational characters, stories and milestones from history that they wish to share with the wider public.

Your job will be to record this exhibition, to be suitable for storage in local archives. We want you to:

  • Create an engaging film that can be watched as a stand alone piece. It must make sense to those who do and those who don;t have knowledge of the wider project.
  • Capture the community vibe
  • Have a good, sensitive understanding of the importance of heritage, and for this to be reflected in the final film you produce
  • Ensure the co-created and collaborative nature of the project shines through
