In 2021 Chol partnered with Kirklees Museums & Galleries and The Children’s Art School to produce ‘My School is at the Museum’. This was an innovative schools offer which responded directly to the impacts of Covid-19 on learning. The week-long project saw Y5 pupils take up residence at the Tolson Museum, utilising the galleries as teaching, discussion and activity spaces. ‘The project effectively increased children’s understanding about the locality and developed their pride of place – what Huddersfield has been in the past and is today. It helped the children understand collective memories and local identity, and developed their confidence, communication skills and self-esteem.’ (Museum Development Yorkshire Annual Review 2020-2021)

Since My School is at The Museum, Chol and Kirklees Museums & Galleries have worked together to deliver a number of site specific projects at the museum, building on mutual values and ambitions. Both partners also share a commitment to using arts-based and multi-sensory approaches so that children with disabilities or children who experience barriers to learning can fully engage in activities.

Building on the success of last year’s Schools in Museum programme when East Bierley Primary School visited Bagshaw Museum as part of their Caring and Creative Schools journey and explored untold stories foregrounding women, Chol and Kirklees Museums and Galleries were both keen to continue this journey.
