The consequences of the climate crisis fall heaviest on future generations and eco-anxiety is on the rise in young people. As an organisation dedicated to enriching the lives of children and young people, we want to make a commitment to create work in the most environmentally responsible way within our capabilities.

Therefore, we are launching Chol Goes Green!

Informed by Carbon Literacy training, networking with the South Yorkshire based Culture and Climate group, and research from The Theatre Green Book and Julie’s Bicycle, we are committing to improving our sustainability in three areas:

  • Travel
  • Materials, Sets, and Costumes
  • Digital Footprint

Travel

Chol’s most obvious carbon output is linked to travel: varied and ever changing locations of the delivery we undertake means we rely heavily on single person occupancy car journeys.

Our target is a 10% year-on-year reduction in overall combustion-engine travel.

We will do this by:

  • Wherever possible, match freelancers to projects based on geographical proximity, as well as skill set.
  • Car share.
  • Hold meetings and projects close to good public transport link.
  • Begin meetings at times that allow additional travel time for use of public transport.

We have also begun to record our monthly mileage to monitor our progress:

Materials, Sets, and Costume

At Chol, our often last minute decision-making about materials, sets, and costumes limits our ability to make sustainable choices, leading to reliance on single-use items and next-day delivery. We want to build time into projects for paying people to think creatively about materials, instead of just buying more.

Following the Theatre Green Book standards, in a BASIC production 50% of everything on stage must be reused or recycled and 65% must be stored or used again afterwards.

Our target is for all of our productions and projects to meet the BASIC standards as a minimum.

We will do this by:

  • Inventory existing materials, sets, and costumes.
  • Design workshops and sets around existing stock.
  • Prioritise secondhand and local purchases.
  • Bulk buy frequently used items from reputable suppliers.
  • Build a database of ethical, sustainable, and local suppliers.
  • Order vegetarian and vegan catering for Chol events.

We are trialling an amended version of the Theatre Green Book Production calculator to ensure projects meet the BASIC standard:

Digital Footprint

The Digital Culture Network website states that 3.7% of global greenhouse gas emissions are created by the internet and our digital devices. In 2021, Google found that if all customers across Google Cloud deleted idle projects, it would have a similar impact to planting almost 10,000 trees.

The Chol website has a Carbon Rating of F. We use Google Drive to store things digitally and have a tendency to stockpile files, using unnecessary energy for database upkeep.

Our target is to organise our Google Drive more energy efficiently and for the Chol Website to achieve a Carbon Rating of B or higher within 12 months.

We will do this by:

  • Website
    • Reduce image size.
    • Host only essential videos.
    • Audit and delete unused images/files in our Customer Managment Service.
    • Review and streamline our user journey – making it as quick as possible for site visitors to find what they need.
    • Cut copy by 50%, then reduce remaining text by another 50%.
    • Use a UK hosting provider powered by renewable energy.
    • Compress HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code.
    • Be selective with tracking scripts – think about the data we actually need to collect and keep it to a minimum.
  • Google Drive:
    • Audit the Drive, deleting unneeded files.
    • Develop a practice of moving projects from the ‘Proposed’ → ‘Live’ → ‘Past’ folders during its life cycle. All past projects which ended over 3 years ago will be moved onto an external drive.
    • Develop a uniform project folder structure for efficient organising.
  • Email:
    • Use WeTransfer, over sending large attachments.
    • Unsubscribing from mailing lists we don’t read.
    • Clearing Junk folders.
    • Deleting email chains that you can backdate more than 12 months.

Sharing Our Green Journey

In order to keep ourselves accountable and share with you our journey to improving our sustainability, we’ll be posting updates regularly on our social media and website. You can expect to hear about our progress, setbacks, and organisations that inspire us.

I hope you’re as excited as we are for Chol Goes Green!
