We’ve been around since 1989.
Chol is a registered charity based in Yorkshire, with most of our work taking place in Kirklees, Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield. We work in everyday community and educational spaces, co-creating stories and projects rooted in local lives and heritage.
Our work grows from curiosity and a drive to explore new and better ways of working together. We reflect and learn as we go, sharing what we discover locally, regionally and beyond. This commitment to learning helps us nurture the next generation of creative change makers, supporting children and young people to feel powerful, valued and connected, and to see that they can shape change in their own lives and communities.

The Chol-Operative
In 2020, we became a Chol-Operative, a woman-led, democratic company model built on collaboration, equality and shared responsibility. We work as a flat-structured team with equal pay, supported by a dynamic board of experienced trustees. We’re now developing the Young Chol-Operative, creating paid opportunities and pathways for emerging artists, producers or any young person interested in working in the arts.
In 2023, we became an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, enabling us to grow our work and reach more people in deeper, more meaningful ways.
Chol’s Environmental Policy
We’re also committed to doing our part for the planet. Each project we deliver includes environmental goals, and we’re always learning how to reduce our footprint and make our work more sustainable.
Our Anti-Racism Strategy
Finally, Strive is our ongoing commitment to anti-racism, equity and inclusion. It’s not a policy or a box to tick – it’s part of who we are. Strive shapes every decision we make and every project we deliver. It keeps us asking questions, learning, and holding ourselves accountable as we work towards a more inclusive and equitable creative world.
