Introducing… The Cholavan!

A unique travelling workshop and office space, The Cholavan allows us to visit communities both on our doorstep and further afield.

We wanted to reduce access barriers to the arts by creating an intriguing space from where we can offer workshops, arts activities, exhibitions and performances. Through a Crowdfunder, and match funding from One Community Foundation we were able to buy a 7.5ton Luton van and set about transforming it into an absolute beacon of joy – or so people tell us.

Since its inception, The Cholavan has popped up for mini residencies at LISTEN 52 in Sheffield, it’s been a Soup Kitchen for WOW Rotherham, it’s journeyed to Chellow Heights School in Bradford where it was transformed into a spaceship brave young explorers.

It’s been a gallery space for the students of Pinc College and King Edwards College, exploring the future of Broadcasting, and it’s set to spend its fourth summer, travelling around Kirklees with The Children’s Arts School delivering summer camps; making, creating, imagining and storytelling, funded by the HAF scheme.

More recently, we used the Cholavan for a set where we transformed it into a Manvers Working Men’s club for the show “Daughters of the Coal.” Set in South Yorkshire, the performance brought together steely-willed women, telling a story of unity and resilience during the mining strikes in 1984.

We’ve had many moments of awe standing back and looking at the Cholavan doing its thing. It’s still hard to believe that in the short space of 12 months, thanks to our wonderful supporters and dedicated team, we managed to fundraise and convert a space that allows us to make joyful experiences and magical memories with children and young people in the heart of their communities.

After a couple of years watching what The Cholavan can do for us, and more importantly, others, we have ambition and new ideas. Watch this space.
