A gorgeous piece of community theatre is coming to Honley – and it needs local performers to help bring it to life! Sticklebacks & Swingboats is a new community project from Holme Valley Sharing Memories Group that explores stories of the Hope Bank Pleasure Grounds in the 1950s.
Over time, the attraction included a zoo, miniature steam train, novel bicycle railway, indoor roller skating rink, shooting gallery, merry-go-round, tea rooms, donkey rides, two boating lakes, ornamental gardens and flower beds. At its peak in 1948, the attraction drew crowds of up to 50,000 – nearly five times the population of Honley itself at the time.

The final performance will be produced by Chol Theatre, using drama to celebrate the history of the pleasure grounds and the stories of people who visited. It will take place at Honley Cricket Club on Saturday 22nd September.
The piece will feature new songs written and performed by singer/songwriter Jenny Goodman, adults from Sharing Memories Group, the Amazing Acapella and Far Cry performing groups, and pupils from Honley Junior School and Southgate School.
Whether you’d like to perform or assist backstage, we want to hear from you! Come and join in, no experience necessary – just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved. This is a volunteer position for those aged 16 and over. Sticklebacks & Swingboats is directed by Joe Gilmour-Rees and will premiere in a fabulous tent at Honley Cricket Club as part of Honley Feast 2018.
