‘On the Coal Face’, part of Birds, Brass and Barnsley Tales

Join us on 9.30am – 5pm, 2 April 2023 at RSPB Old Moor for ‘On the Coal Face’, part of Birds, Brass and Barnsley Tales, a free, all-day event celebrating Dearne Valley’s history and part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, presented by RSPB Old Moor.

We are delighted to be presenting a story trail ‘On the Coal Face’, featuring a community cast telling local tales based upon people’s own memories of pits, pickets and ponies.

The event will also feature:

  • Brass band performances
  • “Wild Words, A Nature & Poetry Walk” Take a walk on the wild side with poet and amateur naturalist Winston Plowes. Rekindle you love for nature and the written word by exploring their connections in this gentle stroll guided by you and your own stories and experiences. “If the path be beautiful, let us not ask where it leads”. –  Anatole France
  • Exploration of mining artefacts with the Mining Memorabilia group
  • Learn more about the Old Moor’s heritage and history through our exhibition and trail (20 Years a Tail)
  • See what lies beneath the surface of our ponds with pond dipping and learn about the Old Moor wildlife

Due to the various performances throughout the day, it’s recommended you bring along a camping chair/ blanket so you can sit back, relax and watch in comfort. Picnics are also advised!
