Community and Social Arts

Co-creation is at the heart of our community and social arts projects. Children and young people drive our theatre and art making activities in communities ensuring they are relevant and accessible. Young people develop their own arts practice, hone skills and take part in positive activities outside of school. We build more accessible and responsive pathways for those interested in creative careers. We deliver three distinct elements to this programme:

Annual Youth-led Performance

Our powerful and bold annual theatre performance is inspired by the extraordinary children and young people we work. It responds to their interests by amplifying their voices, helping new audiences hear what they have got to say. Collaborating with Chol and other artists, we seek to co-create immersive experiences for our audiences in unusual and everyday spaces.

Cholavan in the Community

Our fantastic Cholavan means we are a truly mobile theatre company that develops and creates work at grassroots level. The Cholavan enables us to work in flexible, accessible, and engaging ways with children, young people and families. We run fun holiday camps in local parks and community spaces in collaboration with our partners. A creative project is also developed and delivered in collaboration with cultural partners each year.

Young Chol-Operative

A crucial part of our work is to actively develop and improve pathways to arts careers for young people. This feeds directly into our commitment to reinvigorate and diversify our own team. A group of up to 6 Young Producer Interns aged 16-25 are employed by Chol each year to co-produce our annual or heritage performance. We also employ two Young Assistant Artists to support their practice and work across our projects. These roles offer clear progression routes with the company from young people who might have initially engaged with Chol. A new element of Chol’s work is our Young Advisory Board. Our members work with us to interrogate Chol’s programmes and delivery and hold us to account. These are paid roles and again offer another progression route and valuable work experience for young people and young artists.
