The HSHAZ programme is dedicated to commissioning new artwork. Last year, we put out a call for creative practitioners to respond to Huddersfield’s Heritage Action Zone, one of the incredible applicants we selected is artist Abigail Barker.
Abigail is a mosaic artist from Liversedge. Her practice consists of large-scale artwork made in collaboration with communities, bespoke personal commissions and workshops for small groups of any ability and level of experience. Her artwork is colourful, complex and beautifully finished – we are very proud to be working with such a talented local artist.
For Huddersfield HSHAZ, Abigail is working on a new piece celebrating the heritage of St. George’s Square due for completion in spring, with a sneak preview below!

The final design has been based on in-depth research into Huddersfield’s history, and oral accounts from local people. The imagery has been carefully selected to capture the square’s sporting significance, architectural prowess and cultural importance to Huddersfield. This source material is translated into intricate tile designs, considering scale, composition, colour palette and the intended location of the work’s installation.
